Local with Laurie: Making your hour extra happy

After turning 21-years-old this past December, I learned that there is a lot more to the bars in Winchester than just the drinks. Prices matter, and there are certain establishments around town  where things can be pretty expensive. But, at the same time, you don’t want to get a cheap drink that doesn’t taste good. So, why not get good drinks at a cheap price? To do this just check out some of the local restaurants on certain nights of the week.

Everyone knows about happy hour. Usually it occurs in the early evening, typically sometime between 4 and 8 p.m., however that’s not the only time you can get a good drink.

On Mondays there is the infamous “Margarita Monday” at El Ranchero, where margaritas are only $1.99 the whole day. Bring a group of friends and grab a table with some tacos or fajitas and get a few margaritas. They are $1.99, how can you pass that up?
If you miss “Margarita Monday,” you can head over to La Caretta on Tuesdays where they have drinks for $2.50. Its not $1.99, buts $2.50 is still cheap, and your taste buds will not be disappointed.

If you’re not a fan of tequila, then the Union Jack Pub on the walking mall might be a better place for you. On Tuesday nights, Union Jack’s has a “Draft Discount” night where there is particular draft beer served at a discounted price for the night. Most places have only a few beers on draft, but Union Jack’s has at least 15 different selections. Take your pick — it could surprise you.

At the Piccadilly Public House they have plenty of drink specials to satisfy everybody’s taste buds. Wine, beer, martinis and more. From Tuesday to Sunday, the pub offers specials on various beers from 4 to 7 p.m. Also at Piccadilly’s, on Wednesdays they have rail drink specials, house wine specials and draft specials for about half off. Prices will have to be checked by the bartender, but its still worth a shot. And if that doesn’t work, on Thursdays, Piccadilly’s also has a bucket of beer where you can get 5 bottles of Corona, or any domestic beer of your choice, for a cheap price.

Many of these specials occur throughout the week, so how can you pass them up? You’re in college, don’t waste time on expensive drinks. Go cheap, it’s always the best way.
