Shenandoah Conservatory celebrates the launch of Shenandoah New Music, which will host more than 20 music performances from September 2013 to April 2014.

The performances will be hosted both on campus and in downtown Winchester’s Bright Box Theatre. The purpose of this program is to bring the talents of world famous musicians and Conservatory students together here in the heart of Winchester.

“When I first came to Shenandoah last fall I found an area bursting with possibility, and ready for something daring, new and different,” said Dr. David T. Little. Little, the director of composition at S.U., and Sloan MacRae, the Conservatory managing director and artistic director of Performing Arts Live, are the founders of the program.

Shenandoah New Music’s goal is to gain a wider audience, and to make Winchester — which is just a short drive from Washington, D.C. — “a center of new music in the region.”

Shenandoah New Music will feature the performances of Terry Riley’s “In C,” the Aeolus String Quartet, pianist Louis Andriessen, and ZOFO Duet. This season will also see the debut of the EDGE Ensemble. Formed by our own Conservatory faculty and top performing students, EDGE Ensemble will perform throughout the season.

Another exciting event is Phil Kline’s piece “Unsilent Night,” a tradition in New York City that will now become Winchester’s. Scheduled for Dec. 7, the event is free and anyone, regardless of musical training, can participate.

Shenandoah New Music is an exciting new program for both Shenandoah and the surrounding area. It will offer students and community members exposure to contemporary world-famous music that is not easily found in other places.

Shenandoah New Music will give students a platform to perform their music for a wide audience and allow them to be featured alongside music legends.
