While many students were busy packing and hanging out with friends before they moved back to school, the S.U. women’s soccer team was hard at work preparing for their second year in the ODAC. Coach Liz Pike, starting her seventh year as head coach for the women’s soccer team, added two assistant coaches, Hank Leung and Bobby Foglesong, this season. Pike also added 13 freshmen to join the 13 returning players.
“Our team is very senior heavy this year, I am looking for the freshmen to get involved early.” Pike is looking at having about five freshmen starters on the team this year.
Leadership will be key for the team this year as well. Jenna Kline and Sam Butrym lead on defense, while Courtney Stull and Brittany Mason lead the offense. Freshmen Jennifer Nguyen and Allison Shomo are expected to make early contributions at forward and midfield. The Hornets women soccer team opened their regular season defeating Mary Washington 2-1 at home on Aug. 30. The Hornets were led to victory by sophomore Danielle Burris, who scored both goals. In their second game of the season they continued their streak, besting Marymount 6-0. Their next game will be this afternoon, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m. at Gettysburg.
