13 dead, including the shooter and several injured in the aftermath of Monday’s Navy Yard Shooting.

Around 8:15 a.m. Monday morning shots rang out in Building 197 of the Navy Yard Military Base in Washington, D.C. The Shooter, Navy Veteran, Aaron Alexis, 34 of Fort Worth, TX. reportedly began shooting from a fourth floor overlook targeting those on the first floor of the building. Employees in Building 197 began taking cover, some hid in locked offices and closets, others ran for the exits. The order of events following the initial shots is still under investigation.

Dozens of horrific personal accounts of the events include mass confusion, panic and screaming, as well as reports blood streaked hallways and bodies scattered across the floors.

Navy Commander Tim Jervis, 48, told the Washington Post of his near brush with death, the civilian man standing next to him was shot in an alleyway next to Building 197, after having just exited the building.

Victims were both Military personnel and civilians. D.C. police officer, Scott Williams, 23, was among the injured.

Alexis’ motive for the shooting is still unknown, the Associated Press reported that Alexis was being treated for mental health issues including paranoia and a sleep disorder. Alexis had allegedly been hearing voices in his head in the weeks leading up to the shooting.

Alexis gained access to the military installation as a tech. employee from Hewlett-Packard, as a subcontractor who was updating computer systems at  Navy and Marine Corps. installations and bases. Alexis had just begun working at the Navy Yard at the beginning of the month.

The shooting has already resulted in security review orders of all Navy and Marine Corps bases and installations. This will most likely lead up to a review of the military’s background check system as Alexis had not lost his security clearance despite being having been arrested for shooting a bullet into a neighbor’s apartment in 2010.

This led to his discharge from the Navy in 2011 for a “pattern of misconduct” according to a Navy official. Alexis’ change in mental health should also have brought his security clearance to a review.

The FBI has taken over the investigation of the shooting along with help from local authorities. “I want the investigation to be seamless so that federal and local authorities are working together and as this investigation moves forward we will do everything in our power to make sure that whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible.” said President Obama in a statement Monday afternoon.

As more information about the shooting and the shooter are being discovered the focus has come to the 12 people killed and the dozens of poeple injured.

Of those killed were Michael Arnold, 59, of Lorton; Sylvia Frasier, 53, of Waldorf; Kathy Gaarde, 62, of Woodbridge; John Roger Johnson; 73, of Derwood; Frank Kohler, 50, of Tall Timbers; Kenneth Bernard Proctor, 46, of Waldorf; Vishnu Schalchendia Pandit, 61, of North Potomac; Mary Francis Knight, 51, of Reston; Gerald L.
