Making the registration process a little easier

It’s that time of year again where we have to start thinking about the next semester. Registration can be a difficult and often times frustrating process. If you’ve never used WebAdvisor before it may seem confusing but don’t worry, you’ll be an old pro in no time.

The first step to registering is creating your worksheet which can be found through the ‘plan courses’ link. This will allow you to browse courses by subject and level. You can even search for what your favorite professors are teaching by using the ‘view only – search for degree courses’ option on the left hand side of the webadvisor home menu. If you’re not sure what classes you need the ‘degree audit’ feature, found under ‘academic profile’ is a great starting point. Running a degree audit will show you what degree requirements you’ve completed, are in the process of completion and what requirements you still need to complete.

The next step is to meet with your advisor. After you have an idea of what you want to take make an appointment. Your advisor will make sure you’re on track, as well as suggest other classes you may benefit from.

Your advisor has to approve your classes whether or not you meet with them so you might as well take 15 minutes out of your day to get free advice. It’s always good to check in with your advisor, and building a relationship with your advisor early on will help you out later when it comes time for grad school or internship recommendation letters.

Next, pick your sections. Click on “smart registration” under registration on the student homepage. This will take you to the list of classes you put on your worksheet. Select the classes you want to register for and hit submit. All of the available sections will now appear, you can see the days and time each class is available as well as who the professor will be. Be careful when selecting classes that you don’t pick two classes at the same time.

The last step, of course, is to actually register. The registration calendar is on WebAdvisor’s homepage. Find your registration category and mark your calendar! Registration starts at midnight for each listed date. If you want to be sure to get into all the classes you want register as soon as you can.

If you go to bed early, consider setting an alarm to get up to register at midnight. Classes fill up fast, often within minutes of registration opening, especially for freshmen and sophomores. To register go to “add/drop courses” under registration. You will see all of the class sections you selected in the last step. Under ‘action’ on the left hand side click on the drop down bar for each class and select ‘register’ for each section you want to register for. When you’re done hit ‘submit’ and voila! You’re all set for another semester at S.U.

For more information or help with registration visit the registrar’s office located on the second floor of Wilkin’s Administrative Building.
