If you are one of the lucky few that will be donning a cap and gown in May, you’ve already started getting emails about graduation. There is a lot to get done between now and graduation, here is a quick guide to get you from student to alumni.

The first step is applying for graduation through WebAdvisor. You can apply for graduation now through March 1 to be able to walk in May. It is suggested that you meet with your advisor before applying for graduation just to be sure all loose ends are tied up, you don’t want to have any surprises after applying to graduate.

After your application is in there isn’t much you officially have to do until later in the semester. However you should take some time out of your schedule to take advantage of career services (located in Cooley). They can help you create a resume if you don’t have one already, or help you to revise your current resume to make it stand out from other applicants’. You can even set up mock job interviews to help you improve your interviewing skills. I suggest going to career services sooner rather than later. You may need to take a few visits and the closer to graduation the busier they will be, as “I have to get a real job in a few weeks” panic ensues.

The next important date to remember is Apr. 9, Grad Finale.  From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Ferrari room of the student center, graduates will be able to pick up their cap and gown, order class rings, meet about student accounts and much more. It’s the easiest way to get all of your graduation ‘chores’ done all at once. If you miss the Grad Finale you’ll have to do the ‘Shenandoah Shuffle’ to get everything done.

As graduation day nears more and more senior/graduation events will be held. Check with the clubs and organizations you belong to for senior events, and keep an eye out for the awards ceremony and baccalaureate dates.

You can even follow Shenandoah University Commencement on Facebook and Twitter (@commencementSU) to get all updates and reminders.

Then finally, Graduation Day, May 10. Even though the countdown to graduation has begun try to make the most out of the time you have left at S.U. Spend time with your friends, take lots of pictures and make as many memories as you can before you walk across the stage to get your diploma, and finally join the real world.
