The Shenandoah University men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded a very productive weekend at Christopher Newport University’s Captains Invitational.

The men’s team had seven top 10 finishes on the day, along with two from the women’s team.

Megan Battaglia claimed seventh place in the 60 meter hurdles, making her the only S.U. women’s individual to place.

The other women’s top finish was the 4 X 400 relay team consisting of Emily Cobb, Mary Claire Miller, Shelby Shrader and Battaglia. They finished seventh in this event as well.

The men’s team had had six individual top 10 performances.

Freshman Zachary Dawson gave the men’s team a third place finish in the triple jump.

Senior Kirk Lewis received seventh place in the 400 meter dash and his classmate Ryan Taylor also received seventh in the 800 meters.

Another senior, Evan Griffin, was seventh in the shot put. Freshmen Anthony Banks and

Matthew Gussiaas finished ninth and tenth respectively in the 60 meter hurdles.

The group to finish in the top ten for the men’s team was the 4 X 400 meter relay. The team of Charles Basil, Donald Shubrooks, Everton Eastwood and Kirk Lewis finished eighth in the event.

The team showed great promise for the rest of the year, especially so early in their season.

With four months remaining in their season, they continue to hope for top ten finishes from both the men’s and women’s teams. Coach Andy Marrocco hopes to take this momentum into the Susquehanna Invitational on Feb. 8.
