Halloween is my favorite time of the year. You get to see creepy decorations everywhere, carve pumpkins, eat bags of candy, wear a banana suit…Okay, so not everyone does that, but costumes are a huge part of the Halloween experience, and as college students, we don’t exactly have the money to go buy full blown costumes. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m getting a little tired of the whiskers and five dollar cat ears or stealing your mom’s witch hat and calling it a night; so here’s some new ideas I came up with.

If you like to be more on the comical side, balloons can be your best friends. A bag of purple balloons and you can be a bundle of grapes, or if you grab some white (some big, some small), you can wear a white dress and tape those around the bottom and be a bubble bath. Not to mention, you can buy a dollar store rubber ducky and glue it to a headband. Totally adorable, right?

Now, guys are a little more difficult, but I’ve always loved the classic Clark Kent costume. If you have a blazer, some pants and a superman shirt (which is in the five dollar T-shirt rack at Walmart), you can make a pretty handsome superhero. Don’t forget the glasses either; clear-lensed glasses are almost anywhere and normally no more than $8 to $10. Lumberjack and a zombie (or a zombie lumberjack) are also pretty easy costumes as well. Makeup and fake blood are typically no more than $10. For those two costumes, you can pretty much just wear your everyday clothes and either have an axe or look like you have a disease!

If you like wearing your own clothes and looking like you didn’t try too hard, there’s always being a Sim from the computer game or an American Idol contestant. As a Sim, you just need some green construction paper and wire to make a crown. It’s fairly easy and if you search it online, there are tutorials! To be an American Idol contestant, search for the gold ticket and contestant number online, print it off and tada! You are the next American Idol for Halloween.

Group costumes are pretty fun too if you plan on going out with your friends. The different seasons is an idea you can really jazz up with some cheap craft materials. For example, if you were going to be spring, you could wear a yellow dress and apply some flowers (whether they are fake, real or construction paper) on it. Same goes for being the different types of social media. One person can be the twitter icon and another can be Instagram. It’s a fairly simple concept, but it’s fun! The Three Blind Mice is a cute idea for guys or girls. All you need are some mouse ears and sunglasses! Speaking of mice, ladies (or gents, if you’re into that) there are always the characters from Mean Girls. This could go two ways. Be the main four from their Halloween party or pull out some of your old middle school wardrobe and go as the movie cover. The Breakfast Club would be a fun one too with it’s five distinct personalities. I mean come on, who doesn’t love that movie?

Halloween is a time of year where you can literally be whoever you want to be for a day. This year, Halloween is on a Friday, so you have a whole weekend to fill with fun costumes. I hope some of these costumes gave you ideas on what to wear or even what not to wear. Honestly, if all else fails, you can always just go as a nudist on strike, fully clothed and ready to go! Have a good Halloween, guys. Don’t be afraid to get creative!
