Shenandoah University Hornets Football Preview

By Dean Greenwood

The Shenandoah University football team kicks off their 2017 season Saturday, Sept. 2 at 7:00 p.m.

The Hornets had a promising start to their 2016 season and had been in position to to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) and win their rings. They started off with two wins and two losses then went on a four game winning streak. They dropped their last two games to end their season and chances at an ODAC championship.

“This team is closer than any team I`ve played on before,” said junior quarterback Hayden Bauserman. Shenandoah University named their captains last Wednesday. These captains include seniors Mike Ashwell, Javonte Rose, and Tom Whalen. Junior Hayden Bauserman has also been named a captain. They all believe this is going to be a year to remember.

“I`m excited about this season since we have a lot of returners and a lot of talent,” said Ashwell. The Hornets believe that with many returners who have a lot of experience, that they can have great success this season. They believe this is their best chance in a long time to win a ring..

Last season Bauserman broke the Shenandoah University record for career passing yards and threw 27 touchdown passes. Ashwell had 639 receiving yards and 6 receiving touchdowns. Bauserman and Ashwell look to ignite the offense this season.

On the defensive end Whalen and Rose seek to make a big impact. Last season Whalen had a total of 36 tackles. Rose had 28 tackles. They both look to improve their numbers this season.

“ I think right now we are working out all the rust and are starting to work with one another,” Bauserman said.

The Hornets are excited to get started and go out and compete every single week.

The Hornets will face Gallaudet in their first game on Sept. 2 at 7:00 p.m. at Shentel Stadium.
