Shenandoah University football opened their season with a win 40-14 win against Gallaudet University this past Saturday.
Gallaudet took the early lead on a rainy night with a 12-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Timel Benton to freshman Jordan Martin.
Shortly after, star senior wide receiver Mike Ashwell caught a 20-yard pass to get the Hornets six points. The Hornets went for the two-point conversion, but could not convert. This started a 33-point run.
Gallaudet would only score again in the third quarter with an 18-yard run by senior Cody Paulay-Simmons.
The Shenandoah defense played a great game, under the leadership of Bernie Hayes III, including a 36-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. He also recorded eight total tackles. The defense allowed only 74 passing yards and forced four turnovers.
Junior Hayden Bauserman threw for 394 yards and four touchdowns. Ashwell lead the receivers with 120 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Mario Wisdom, lead in rushing with 71 yards.
The Hornets racked up 556 total offensive yards, with a possession time of 23:01.
The Hornets take on N.C. Wesleyan in an away contest this Saturday.
