Why is Mercury in the Microwave?

Morgan Letizia

WINCHESTER, VA-  I’m sure you’ve heard the warnings, something about Mercury and retrograde. What does this really mean and why does everyone seem to fear it so much? Where even is Mercury anyway?

Mercury is the planet closest to the sun and it is also the smallest planet in the solar system. However when Mercury is in retrograde, it certainly doesn’t feel small. When a planet enters retrograde, it appears to reverse direction. Retrograde is actually due to an optical illusion, but its side effects may not feel like an illusion. Because Mercury is the planet of communication, it tends to shake things up when it enters retrograde.

Decision making is highly advised against during Mercury retrograde. Most things, such as jobs or relationships, aren’t running as smoothly as usual and any decision made during retrograde will most likely not have the best result. This can apply to big decisions as well as small ones, so it’s best to just leave things as they are for the duration of  retrograde. You may accept a job offer that isn’t what you thought it would be or you may buy something that goes on sale right after retrograde is over.

There is no fool-proof way to survive Mercury retrograde, the best advice is to just hunker down and count down the days until it’s over. This is not the time to make any big moves or changes and you should take this time to practice self care and lay low. However, there are no more periods of Mercury retrograde left in 2020 so take a breath and take this knowledge into 2021.
